I have to cancel the Fall Meeting scheduled for today Friday, November 11th. My little ones are sickly so I can't leave them with the sitter. My apologies.... I will try to get us all together again soon!

Fall Sewing Club Meeting Friday, November 11th 1:30-3:30 upstairs at Beans and Cream 60 Brickerton Street.

Bring your machine to work on a project or just come by and visit with everyone. Since Fall is in full swing for me that means starting my Christmas sewing! I am planning to make crayon rolls for the little ones in my family, casserole carriers for the ladies and I'm still trying to decide on what to do for the guys so share your ideas.

Monkey Quilt

Oh how I covet this Monkey Quilt!

It is made by Laurraine Yuyama. Look how his little ears stick out! So cute I can't stand it.

My youngest son's room is monkeys and I've been searching for bedding to transition him to a big boy bed. I came across this adorable quilt and am contemplating making it. However, the thought of cutting all those little fabric pieces is daunting to me. I love to sew...the physical act of creating / stitching. I do not like the prep work of cutting pattern pieces. I have to mull it over a bit more before I commit. I'm so slow he will probably be in college before I could complete it and I don't think his fraternity brothers would appreciate my labor of love.

She made this One Little Monkey quilt too and I might be better able to manage just one monkey. If anyone out there is feeling especially handy with scissors please feel free to cut away and send me the pieces ready to quilt!

I just saw the list of Life Enrichment Classes the W is offering this semester and one of the founders of Possum Town Quilters of Columbus is teaching a beginners quilting class. Favorite Fabric Spots

We had such a nice get together at our last meeting. I finished my casserole carrier (just have to find some handles to add before I post a photo), Lorena completed a grilling apron for her husband and Cindy started a bag using her recently acquired Japanese fabric. And best of all Susie brought fabric from her Grandmother to share with everyone.....it was a nice little addition to my stash!

We were discussing our favorite places to buy fabric and supplies during the meeting. Since we don't have many options locally I buy most of my "ingredients" online so I thought I'd share my favorite sites with everyone. March Sewing Project PAJAMAS!

I came across this photo of super cute (and seemingly simple) pajamas and had to make them. I love the idea of attaching a piece of coordinating fabric to a pre-made t-shirt and the matching bag.....well, you know my love for bags! The pattern is by the Australian company Make It Perfect. I bought mine from Cedar House Fabrics on Etsy. If you're not into buying a pattern there are lots of fun tutorials to make similar PJs. I listed some below for you.

Holiday Sewing

I just finished sewing my first round of Christmas presents. Making things for people on my holiday list is so much more fun than shopping! I call these Sorority Sister Shoe Sacs...... I followed the tutorial and didn't put a lining in but I don't like the raw edges that you see when you open up the bag. Next time I think I'll have to line them or sew it somehow so there are no raw edges. One gift down! Hope you are enjoying your holiday sewing.

I'm BACK....

I'm Back....After several hospital stays and the birth of my newest addition I've been holed up in my home venturing out to complete only the most necessary of tasks. However, of late, I've gotten out a bit more and realized how much I missed getting together with friends and sharing ideas and inspirations.

I actually finished a few little sewing projects lately and it fueled my motivation to work on more! I'll start posting on my blog site again and hopefully plan some get togethers for the local sewing club soon.

February Meeting Update

Hope this recent SUNNY weather is putting a spring in your step!

Just a reminder that our February Sew Southern Sewing Club meeting is this Saturday, February 20th from 1:30-3:30 at my house. If you would like to join us and need directions please email me. You can bring your machine to work on projects or just come and hang out with us. Please always feel free to bring patterns, tutorials, fabrics, books or ideas to share with the group.

I'd like to start a fabric swap box so if you have any fabric scraps or pieces that you are not going to use yourself and would like to donate please bring them for our swap box.

If you completed or are working on our February group sew along project please bring your creation....I'd love to see your aprons!

Here is a picture of the nursing apron I completed since I already mailed it off to its intended recipient. I made it reversible with coordination fabrics and a terry cloth corner on each side for easy wipe-ups.

Hi all. I apologize once again for my absence.... the pregnancy, move, and family events have had me snowed under! With the holidays coming up I'm thinking we'll take a break from meeting until the new year. Lets get together again on Saturday, January 16th 2010. Mark your calendars now! I think my favorite part of getting together is seeing what everyone has made or is working on…. I always get great ideas and inspiration from your projects so let’s keep “show and tell” as a staple in our meetings.

Please bring a sewing project that you’ve completed or want to complete for show and tell.
One of our club members will give us a little tutorial on button holes. (I’m excited about this since I usually wimp out and use Velcro instead of attempting buttons!)
If you’ve completed September’s project, the Sewing Supplies Case, bring yours….I’d love to see what everyone came up with. How to Sew a French Seam

I've been making lots of shoe bags and gift bags lately and skimping on fabric and labor by leaving out the lining. I don't like the unsightly "raw" fabric that is visible on the interior of the bag without a lining so I did a little research and came across French Seams = problem solved. The definition I found says "A French seam is a seam which encloses the seam allowance on the inside of a sewn item" and it is super easy! FREE Software Program for Drafting & Printing Patterns

I just came across this Free Software Program for Drafting and Printing Patterns for hats, bags, wraps, belts, and footwear by Wild Ginger Software, Inc. It is called Wild Things and the web page says it has embroidery design planning tools and you can specify the dimensions for each item to draft accessories for your needs. I haven't used it yet but it sounds interesting so I wanted to share.

FANTASTIC! The Kidlet Wall Pocket......Something attractive to store toys in that doesn't take up valuable floor space, is easy for my little one to get his toys out of AND put them away in (ha-wishful thinking).

I'm going to make one for me too! I'm always digging around for my sewing stuff while in the middle of a project and I can't leave anything out on my desk or my little one will snatch it up. This will be perfect to hang within my reach to store scissors, seam ripper, ruler, fabric marker, etc in. Oh and I think I'll make one to hang on the front door for mail..... I better get sewing!

Wow, this looks like so much fun! A funky Craft Studio and Sewing Lounge.....they even have monthly Crafty Cocktail happy hours – "an evening of craftacular sophistication and socializing" I must think of how to incorporate this into our sewing club calendar! Bare Minimum Diaper Tote

Sew Southern Sewing Club's First Sew Along Project....... Pimp my Machine aka Sewing Machine Cover

I don't have alot of storage in my home so I have to keep my sewing machine on an open shelf in my bedroom. The ugly plastic cover that houses my machine is just downright depressing to look at all day so when I came across the above photo I was literally giddy. I can't wait to pimp out my machine!

I thought this would be a fun and simple project for us to start with. Reversible Drawstring Bag Tutorial

OK, so I think I'm going to nickname myself the bag lady.... I seem to be obsessed with making bags of all sorts! I had these adorable home sewn baby shoes to give as a gift and wanted to present them in lovely wrapping representative of the gift inside. No store bought packaging seemed to do the little homemade shoes justice so I thought I would sew a gift bag that could also be used afterward in the baby's room for storage. The bag is a nice size to store toys, pacifiers, diapers, bibs, etc (I have a similar bag that hangs off our changing table where I keep diapers and ointment for easy access) and I like how the pretty coordinating fabric lining peeks out the top.

Next time I think I will add a little pocket to the front in the coordinating lining fabric to hold a gift card!

Shoe Bag Tutorial

There are endless goodies to sew for girls but I was trying to think of something to make for the men in my life and it came to me... Shoe Bags! We are frequent travelers in my family so I thought shoe bags for keeping the dirty soles of shoes away from clothes in a suitcase would be welcome gifts for guys AND girls.

Obviously I will need a bit more manly fabric than is pictured here for the guys and may need to expand the bag's measurements to accommodate big shoes that go along with 6 foot + statures but the basics should remain the same.
